U.S. Army Pfc. Glendon Oakley Jr. was off duty shopping in a sports store in the El Paso Cielo Vista Mall when a child came running in saying there was a shooter nearby.

The Killeen native jumped into action running towards the shots, where he saw "a whole lot of kids just running around without their parents". He and another hero picked up as many kids as they could and took them to safety, according to Millitary.com and our news partners KWTX.

Oakley has two years of military experience and is currently stationed at Fort Bliss. His father served and was stationed at Fort Hood.

Already decorated, Oakley's awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. His off duty actions just go to show he truly is a hero.

He does not want the focus to be on him, and believes the victims and their families should come first.

We don't want to take away from anyone, but shine a light on someone who took action to save lives in a nightmare situation. The 22-year-old proved that we can still find the best souls in the most horrific events.
