Killeen Teenager Faces First Degree Murder Charge Following Austin Shooting

A teenager from Killeen is facing serious charges after the mass shooting that occurred on Sixth street in Austin in July.

According to a report from KVUE, 19-year-old De'Ondre Jermirris White has been indicted by a Travis county Grand Jury on a first-degree murder charge, and also 14 counts of aggravated assault for the injury of 14 people injured during the shooting.

White was arrested on June 24, 2021 at approximately 2:23 p.m. by members of the United States Marshals Service – Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, and with the assistance from the Killeen Police Department Specialized Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.

Initial reports pointed to several teenagers from the Killeen area as responsible. 17-year-old Jeremiah Tabb was originally believed to have been the shooter, but the investigation ultimately pointed to White.

The Austin Police Department stated that the Travis County District Attorney’s Office chose to drop the charges against Tabb, as well as charged pressed against an unnamed 15-year-old who was also believed to have been involved.

While the other teens are believed to have possessed weapons, officials do not believe they were ever fired.

Investigators think that beef between adolescents is what may have led to the shooting.

25-year-old Douglas John Kantor was the only person to lose their life in the shooting. Kantor was a bystander, and not involved with the feuding groups.

“This case has deeply affected our community and our hearts continue to be with the family of Mr. Kantor, as well as all the victims of assault,” said Efrain de la Fuente, assistant director for the Trial Division and Homicide and Major Crimes Unit. “We appreciate APD’s work on the scene to render aid and transport people to hospitals, as well as the hard work and dedication from the detectives in this difficult and ongoing investigation.”

White's bond has been set at $1 million, and he is expected to remain in custody for the remainder of his trial.
