Kodak Black Faces 10 Years in Prison for Allegedly Lying to Buy Firearm

Two days after being arrested on federal and state firearms charges in Miami on Saturday (May 11), Kodak Black is facing some very serious legal trouble.

According to court documents obtained by XXL on Tuesday (May 14), the Florida rapper faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for allegedly lying in order to obtain a firearm at Lou's Police Distributors gun store in Hialeah, Fla. on two separate occasions earlier this year. He also faces a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.

On Monday (May 13), Kodak Black's criminal attorney, Bradford Cohen, confirmed to XXL that the 21-year-old rapper has been indicted on two counts of making a false statement in connection with the acquisition or attempted acquisition of a firearm. 

Prosecutors allege that Kodak lied while filling out his Firearms Transaction Record (Form 4473), which is the form that must be filled out in order to purchase a registered firearm.

Prosecutors allege that when Kodak was filling out the section that asks if the person is under indictment for a felony, he checked it off with a "no," even though Kodak was previously indicted for criminal sexual conduct for a 2016 case in South Carolina. Subsequently, Kodak was arrested before he had the chance to perform at 2019 Rolling Loud Miami this past weekend.

Cohen told XXL that legal jargon can make paperwork like the Firearms Transaction Record confusing for people to read.

"When you throw around legal terms like an indictment, information, or anything like that where someone's not an attorney, [the federal government is] making the assumption that you know what that means," Cohen said without indicating whether or not Kodak actually filled out the paperwork.

Kodak Black is due in court for a bail hearing tomorrow (May 15).
