A man attempting to cross Interstate 35 in Belton was killed Thursday evening when he stepped in front of an 18-wheeler.

The unidentified man tried to cross the highway on foot between the US 190/I-35 merge and Loop 121 exit when he was hit shortly before 5 p.m. The driver managed to stop his truck about a half mile away from the scene of the collision and was questioned by authorities. No other injuries were reported, nor were any other vehicles involved.

Traffic was diverted onto the northbound access roads while the Belton Crime Scene Unit investigated the scene. Traffic was backed up from US 190 in Belton to FM 2484 in Salado until 7:45 p.m.
