A Killeen man is believed to have shot and killed his wife late Tuesday night before turning the gun on himself, taking his own life.

According to a press release from the Killeen Police Department, a couple was having a domestic dispute when things took a horrible turn.

Officials arrived at the couple's home in the 3900 block of Tatonka Drive at 11:54 PM Tuesday, February 23 after receiving a 911 call in reference to a shooting.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the female victim and the male were involved in a domestic disturbance when the male produced a handgun and shot his wife. The male was in the garage when officers arrived. Police say he shot himself while police were at the scene.

Unfortunately, there were three children in the residence at the time. Thankfully, police say they were unharmed.

Authorities have identified the husband as Archie Andrew Mitchell, 40 and wife as Tiffany Shaquina Shepard, 34.

Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson pronounced Shepard deceased at 2:12 AM and Mitchell at 2:14 AM. Johnson ordered autopsies to be performed at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

The investigation is on-going by the Killeen Police Department, but they do not plan to release any further details involving the case.

It's absolutely heartbreaking that children were in that home when a fight turned violent and, ultimately, fatal. Although police say they were unharmed, doubtless they will psychological scars that we can't see from the outside.

Police have not said if the couple had a history of domestic violence, but if you've been a victim, please reach out for help before things escalate.
