Killeen police reported Wednesday that a suspect in Sunday morning's fatal shooting on Watercrest Road is in custody.

Police did not release the suspected shooter's identity due to their ongoing investigation, but said the suspect is in the Killeen City Jail pending formal charges from the Bell County District Attorney's Office.

Killeen PD officers were called to the Crew Hookah Lounge at 4400 Watercrest Road at approximately 2:13 AM Sunday in reference to a 9-1-1 call about a shooting victim.

When police arrived, they found 25-year old Anthony Newton suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers performed life-saving measures until paramedics arrived, and Newton was transported to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition.

Unfortunately, Newton later passed away as a result of his injuries. Newton was pronounced deceased at 4:03 AM by Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke, who ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.

According to police, the shooting marked the second homicide in the City of Killeen in 2021.

Sadly, this was not the only report of gun violence in Killeen this week.

Late Tuesday night, a domestic dispute in the 3900 block of Tatonka Drive turned deadly when a man arguing with his wife pulled a handgun and fatally shot her. When police arrived at the scene, the man turned the gun on himself, ending his own life. Children were present in the home, and police say they were not harmed.

Killeen police were investigating Wednesday afternoon after someone was shot near the Killeen Mall. Police said a suspect had been identified, but no arrest had yet been made.
