If you've got old and expired prescription drugs lying around and you're wondering how to safely dispose of them, our advice is to let the Temple Police Department do it for you.

They've got an Rx bottle collection bin in their lobby at 209 E Avenue A you can use year-round, and they're taking advantage of the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day and Bloomin' Temple to remind everyone.

From 10 AM to 2 PM Saturday, April 27, TPD will accept prescription pills for safe disposal. They will NOT be accepting any liquids or over the counter medications.

Chances are you'll be headed downtown that day to have some fun at Bloomin' Temple, so bring those old Rx's along and use the opportunity to make room in your medicine cabinet and keep those drugs out of the wrong hands.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue," TPD Media Relations Specialist Chris Christoff writes in a media release about the event. "Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Helping people to dispose of potentially harmful prescription drugs is just one way DEA and Temple Police Department is working to reduce the addiction and overdose deaths plaguing this country due to opioid medications."

If you have any questions about what's acceptable to bring or how the drugs are disposed of, you can contact the Temple Police Department at (254) 298-5500.
