The man charged with fatally shooting  a Harris County sheriff's deputy is scheduled to appear in court Monday to face a capital murder charge.

Investigators say 30-year-old Shannon J. Miles gunned down 47-year-old Deputy Darren H. Goforth in a seemingly random attack at a gas station Friday night. According to witnesses, Goforth was filling his vehicle at a Chevron convenience store about 25 miles from downtown Houston around 8:30 p.m. when the gunman approached him from behind and began shooting. When Goforth fell the ground, his attacker continued to fire before fleeing.

Miles, whose criminal history includes six arrests - two for using force against an officer, was linked to the crime after ballistics tests found that the gun used in the attack belonged to him. He was arrested Saturday. Police have no leads on a motive and say Miles may have targeted Goforth simply because he was in uniform.

"We found no other motive or indication that it was anything other than that," Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said during a press conference Saturday. He added that there is no reason to believe Goforth and his attacker knew each other and cited what he called a trend of “dangerous national rhetoric” for the rising tension between citizens and law enforcement in recent months.

Speaking at the same press conference, Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson asked communities to come together to condemn the shooting and support law enforcement and keep the peace.

“It is time for the silent majority in this country to support law enforcement,” Anderson said. “There are a few bad apples in every profession. That does not mean that there should be open warfare declared on law enforcement.”
