Summers in Texas are HOT HOT HOT. Fortunately Spring, Fall, and Winter can be close to perfect for hiking and biking.

Killeen city officials have announced a mid-November opening for the city's newest hiking and biking trail. The Heritage Oaks Hike & Bike Trail has seen some delays over the last year, but all seems in place to officially open the trail soon.

According to KXXV, Channel 25, Joe Brown, Killeen Executive Director of Recreation Services, says, “When you walk this trail, you’ll see it’s going to be a real asset and a gym for the city of Killeen and quite frankly for the region,” adding, “It runs through trails and hills. There’s a number of low-water crossings over the creek. The architect of the trail is really special.”

The trail runs just under 4 miles and , according to Brown, “It connects Killeen to Harker Heights via a sidewalk on the trail. It’s connecting Heritage Oaks trail to Purser Park.”

Hilary J. Shine with the City of Killeen reported in a news release issued back in July that the trail will run about 3.5 miles along the southern end of Rosewood Drive while following Pyrite Drive and Trimmier Creek.

The City officials say there are more features on the way, with plans for a playground and pavilion.

It's great to see some new trails for hiking and biking opening up in the area. Getting outdoors is a great way to relieve stress, burn off some energy, and get some exercise.
