A vacant church in Temple being used as a storage room received moderate smoke damage Sunday after equipment inside the structure caught fire.

Temple Fire and Rescue Chief Mitch Randles reports that eight units and 21 fire personnel were dispatched to the old church building at 1102 South Main Street at 6:04 PM. When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the building and entered to investigate. They found two pieces of construction equipment stored inside the building in flames.

Fortunately, firefighters were able to keep the fire confined to the central room in which the equipment was being kept. The building itself only sustained moderate smoke damage.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported. The fire was under control by 6:32 PM, and all units had cleared the scene by 7:41 PM.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday morning.
