How did they get 40 people inside that box? That has to be one of the questions officials are asking after another large group of people was discovered at the Texas border this week.

KWTX is reporting that Border Patrol agents in South Texas discovered 40 undocumented immigrants inside a metal box being hauled by a trailer at the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint.

The driver of the truck was hauling several metal boxes, and agents became suspicious after seeing a large vent about 16 inches by 6 inches in size on one of the boxes. When the vent was removed, it revealed 40 migrants trapped inside in a seated position, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The Box Had to Be Ripped Apart to Save Them

Agents had to break the box apart by unscrewing multiple bolts using a power tool from the truck. The box had no other opening or means of escape. When officials searched the truck, they also found a handgun and loaded magazines. The undocumented immigrants were from Central America and Mexico, and were taken into custody along with the driver.

Human Smuggling in Coryell County

This illegal activity isn't just taking place at the Texas border. Last week, the Coryell County Sheriff’s Office interrupted a human smuggling operation and arrested 12 people, according to KWTX.

Everyone involved led officials on a brief chase, after which all 12 suspects were captured by the Gatesville Police Department. The driver of the vehicle was charged with smuggling of persons, resisting arrest or search, and evading arrest or detention.

Nine subjects, all of whom had illegally entered the United States from South and Central America, were released to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Officials at the Coryell County Jail.
