The Cleveland police officer that fatally shot 12 year-old Tamir Rice in 2014 was fired today (May 30).

Rice's death prompted protests across the country after video of the shooting was released, directly contradicting what Loehmann claimed happened. Tamir was playing with a toy gun in a local park when Loehmann came on the scene and shot the child within two seconds of his arrival.

Additionally, Frank Garmback, who pulled his cruiser within feet of Tamir, was suspended for 10 days without pay, reports Cleveland.com.  However, Loehmann wasn't fired for shooting Tamir, but for lying on his application with the Cleveland police department.  Two others have been disciplined in the Tamir Rice case, including the 911 call taker, Constance Hollinger, and officer William Cunningham, who was working was working off-duty at the rec center without permission. He received a two-day suspension without pay.

In the wake of Tamir's death, many artists have dedicated songs to him and spoken of his killing, comparing it to Emmet Till's lynching, which helped spark the Civil Rights Movement, including T.I. who references the 12 year-old in his video for "War Zone."

The city paid a $6 million settlement to Tamir's family following his death.
