Texas Senator John Cornyn joins Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey in calls for the Senate Armed Services Committee to hold hearings regarding recent deaths of soldiers at Fort Hood.

According to a report from KWTX, Fort Hood just recently saw a change in leadership and perhaps more changes are coming. Sen. Cornyn is asking for a public hearing with Army leadership and a panel of civilians to discuss "culture and climate" at the army base.

In a letter written on Sept. 3, Cornyn, Warren and Markey said,

“We are determined to seek justice and answers for their families and to ensure the Army is implementing necessary reforms at Fort Hood, and that Congress is holding the Army accountable.”

Sen. Cornyn said in an interview on Tuesday,

“We should have been on top of this earlier,” the Senator said in an interview on Tuesday. One of the questions I’m going to have for the Army is ‘why did you wait for it to get this bad?'”

Fort Hood has had 28 deaths this year and although no date has been set for the hearing, Sen. Cornyn has said it will be “relatively soon”.

Last week, Maj. Gen. John B. Richardson IV formally assumed duties as deputy commanding general for operations of III Corps and acting senior commander of Fort Hood. With him came Gen. John Murray, commanding general of Army Futures Command. General Murray is tasked with investigating Fort Hood's handling of the death of Spc. Vanessa Guillen. Meanwhile, 5-person civilian team is currently investigating the culture on and around Fort Hood.
