NAACP Gets Bold And Tells Athletes Not To Sign With Texas Teams, But Will They?
Controversial laws passed in Texas earlier this year are constantly being met with opposition. The NAACP is now calling on professional athletes not to sign on any team in the Lone Star State.
But will they listen?
In a press release put out today the organization says:
"As we watch an incomprehensible assault on basic human rights unfold in Texas, we are simultaneously witnessing a threat to constitutional guarantees for women, children and marginalized communities, Over the past few months, legislators in Texas have passed archaic policies, disguised as laws, that directly violate privacy rights and a woman's freedom to choose, restrict access to free and fair elections for Black and brown voters, and increase the risk of contracting coronavirus. If you are a woman, avoid Texas. If you are Black, avoid Texas. If you want to lower your chances of dying from coronavirus, avoid Texas."
On the other hand, Governor Abbott reportedly told CNBC in September that the new laws are driving businesses to Texas:
“People vote with their feet and this is not slowing down businesses coming to the state of Texas at all. In fact, it is accelerating the process of businesses coming to Texas interestingly, they are leaving the very liberal state of California,”
I understand why the organization is urging athletes not to sign in Texas, but I don’t think their effort will become successful.
In my opinion, despite all the BS laws that are being passed in Texas, like the very racist voting rights bill and the recent abortion law, it is still a great place to live, and that no state income tax, is a hell of a draw especially if you make millions of dollars, we’ll see what happens!
