Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on which we not only celebrate the message and the legacy of Dr. King, but do what we can to keep that legacy alive with service to our fellow human beings.

Day of Service events have been happening all over Central Texas today, and to cap it all off, the Temple chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will hold an MLK Day parade through Downtown Temple beginning at 4 PM.

The traditional march has been adapted into a parade this year, and the parade reaches City Hall, participants and anyone who would like to be there and listen will hear from local playwright, filmmaker, and business owner Dr. Kerry-Ann Zamore. She'll speak about finding hope in the troubling times we're all experiencing right now.

The parade will begin on Avenue M near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and, as mentioned above, conclude at City Hall, 2 North Main Street in Downtown Temple.

While today is a day of service, and we sincerely thank everyone who's gotten involved in community projects around Central Texas, it's understandable that many people can't make it out to such events. That's ok. What you can do is just give a little extra of yourself today. Help a neighbor in need with something simple, or find a way to make a co-worker's load a little easier to carry today.

Simply find a way to be a blessing to others. I think that's very much in the spirit of MLK Day, which is all about recognizing and celebrating the inherent value and dignity of our fellow human beings, regardless of our differences.
