Texans Can Enjoy a State Park for Free as a Veterans Day Thank You

Veterans Day is Thursday November 11. As a way of saying thanks to Texas veterans, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will be waiving entrance fees at state parks for all day-use visitors on Sunday, November 14.

Veterans Day is always filled with parades, free food, discounts, sales, and deals. There are plenty of ways to honor our military, but how about a day at the park?

In an announcement by TPWD, Rodney Franklin, Director of Texas State Parks, wrote:

“The dedication, sacrifice and service displayed by the women and men that serve in our country’s military is unparalleled and is a source of pride throughout the country. To celebrate their service, Texas State Parks would like to once again invite everyone to spend the day at any one of our beautiful State Parks for free. I am glad that we are able to encourage families to get outside in honor of our veterans.”

Franklin is recommending people reserve day passes in advance, as many of the parks are expected to reach their capacity limit in advance.

Here's something to keep in mind: Texans can fish free without a license or stamps in our state parks. Many parks will even lend you equipment, though I'm pretty sure you'll need your own bait and lure.

Those interested can also donate to help support the Veterans Commission’s Veterans Assistance Fund when purchasing a hunting or fishing license.

Those donations help provide grants to veteran organizations here in Texas. Yet another great way to honor a veteran. License fees also go toward helping TPWD protect and preserve our natural resources, including our parks, waterways, wildlife, and fish.

Whether it's free food, a great sale, or even a day at the park, make sure to thank a veteran for their service.
