Former President Donald Trump has reportedly asked Texas Governor Greg Abbott for an audit of the 2020 presidential election results in Texas - a state in which Trump won by over a half-million votes.

Forbes reports that Trump sent a letter to Gov. Abbott and asked him to "act now" on performing an audit of the 2020 Presidential Texas Results.

What's the basis of his requests?

He "hears Texans want an election audit".

Reportedly the letter from Trump goes on to say:

“Your citizens don’t trust the election system, and they want your leadership on this issue, which is the number one thing they care about.”

The former President won the Lone Star State by 6 percentage points but reportedly urged the state legislature to pass House Bill 16, which would create civil investigations into election “irregularities” if there are complaints.

Texas passed a controversial election bill after special sessions were called by Gov. Abbott over the summer. Texas House Democrats at one point fled the state to avoid a vote and urge Congress to pass a federal election bill, but to no avail.

Since losing November's presidential election, Trump has pushed conspiracy theories and claimed that the election was somehow "stolen" from him. Again, although Trump easily won the state of Texas, Gov. Abbott has joined other Republican leaders in pushing for stricter election laws based on Trump's continued popularity with the Republican base.

Given that he's up for re-election in 2022 (and rumored to be considering a run for the presidency himself), Abbott may go along with this. We'll see.
