There's an effort being made to decriminalize low-level marijuana possession in Killeen, Texas from the same group that got the issue on the Austin ballot in May. If you're a registered voter in Killeen, they're asking for you to sign their petition to get an ordinance on the November ballot.

Marijuana Is Illegal in Texas

Marijuana is currently illegal across the State of Texas. Meanwhile, other states have some form of legalized weed, whether it's for medicinal purposes or recreational use, and marijuana is widely becoming decriminalized in some form.

Every year a new state puts some kind of legalized weed legislation on the ballot for the voters to decide. In most cases, the legislation passes. It's a clear sign that the taboo and stigma associated with marijuana is are no longer as powerful as they once were.

Will Texas Legalize Marijuana?

Texas continues to be one of those holdout states with a legislature that doesn't seem likely to budge on the legalization of weed any time soon. However, there have been some interesting developments.

For example, it was as recently as 2019 that laws were revised to allow the cultivation of hemp in Texas while keeping marijuana illegal.

In June 2021, the Texas House passed a bill that raised the legal THC limit from 0.5% to 1% and expand its medicinal use to include all forms of cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Originally, lawmakers were trying to get it at 5%, but the Texas Senate lowered it to 1%.

Will Killeen, Texas Decriminalize Marijuana?

According to The Killeen Daily Herald, an effort is underway to gather signatures on a petition to decriminalize low-level marijuana possession in the city.

Ground Game Texas, the same group that got the decriminalization of low-level marijuana possession on the Austin ballot for May, is behind the petition.

Should Marijuana Be Decriminalized in Killeen, Texas?

If your answer is "yes", you need to sign the petition to get the measure on the ballot later this year.

At least 2,500 signatures are needed from registered Killeen voters before the group can make a proposal to the city.

Ground Game Texas plans to work on decriminalization of low-level marijuana possession in Harker Heights as well.

Decriminalization Is Not Legalization

It's important to note that decriminalization is not the same as legalization.

If a decriminalization law passes in Killeen or Harker Heights, it doesn't legalize recreation use of weed - it just prevents police from pursuing low-level possession charges.

That's a great next step in legalizing the use of marijuana in the State of Texas.

Baby steps, but definitely progress.
