Here Are 6 Things Texans Do Wrong During Icy Weather
Being a native Midwesterner, snow, ice, and sleet is a yearly thing I would experience. Trust me, the cold icy weather up north gets overwhelming after a while. Of course, you know, it's much worse than what we are going through now. In fact, that was one of the reasons I moved to Killeen, Texas - to get away from cold weather!
Since I've been here, I've noticed some that Texans do when it's cold and snowing outside, and a lot of it's really unnecessary.
So I have compiled a list of 6 things Texans do wrong when the weather is cold and icy.
Are you guilty of any of these?
Panic Buy Everything, (We Mean Everything) In The Store
This should have actually been number one.
Is there really a need to panic purchase, people?
For example: Instead of buying 4 rolls of toilet tissue, why not just purchase 2?
Just to leave some for others, don't be selfish. Think of those who really need these supplies.
This cold is going to last maybe 3-4 days, then temperatures will go back up.
Driving Way Too Fast
Some of you think just because you have a truck with big wheels that you can drive during icy weather.
Wrong!
When it rains during freezing temperatures, that turns into ice, which turns into icy roads, and the final result is you losing control of your vehicle and causing an accident.
It's not enough to have power under the hood. You've also got to have experience driving in icy conditions, infinite patience, and enough sense to know when not to even bother.
Once you run into something, like a pole or a median, that opens up the possibility for another car hitting you, and the next thing you know we have a pile-up!
Half A$& Defrosting Our Cars
I was scrolling on Facebook today and saw someone driving in this weather, and I couldn't help but notice their windshield.
That's another thing Texans don't do - properly defrost your car.
This is something I have been guilty of in the past as well. You've got to get up early and give yourself at least 15-20 minutes to warm up your car.
Also, make sure your windows are clean. Chances are the weather you are driving in is going to make your windshield dirtier.
You don't want to make your visibility worse driving in this weather.
Forget To Wrap Pipes And Drip Faucets
When there are freezing temperatures, you are generally warned to run your water or wrap your pipes to prevent them from freezing.
I have also been told to open the cabinet doors to ensure pipes attract heat.
The last thing you want is for your pipes to freeze and then burst.
That creates another unnecessary problem.
We Wait Until The Very Last Minute To Prepare
Yup, we knew the storm would hit late Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning.
Yet, we crowded stores in Temple, Killeen, Belton, and Harker Heights, and in other areas as if we had a deadline to beat!
If you know severe weather is approaching the area, why not purchase what you need days ahead of time?
That way, you don't have to worry about what you need being in stock and you will avoid the huge crowds. (COVID is still happening.)
Didn't Buy A Coat (Because... Why?)
What's the purpose of owning a coat when you live in Texas?
Well, the icy conditions and cold weather are exactly why!
But it's one of the biggest mistakes Texans make.
I know snow and cold temperatures only happen once a year in Texas, but you have to stay ready!
Why not just buy a heavy coat and keep it in your closet? After all, you never know when you are going to need it.
