This Saturday, Aggie fans everywhere watched their team return to the field for the first game of the season. Although the Aggies won the game, they didn't exactly win points with the public, as Heisman winner Johnny Manziel gave the media exactly what they were looking for---controversy.

As a former student of Texas A&M, I am a die hard Aggie football fan. I was pumped to watch my team return for the first game of the season, including Heisman winning quarterback, Johnny Manziel, whose controversial behavior has kept ESPN in business during the slow summer months. Unfortunately, about half of A&M's defense was suspended for the first 2 games, a decision that was announced right before kickoff. On top of that, both Manziel and junior cornerback, Deshazor Everett, were suspended for the first half for various reasons. Due to the suspension, junior QB Matt Joeckel, twin of No. 2 overall pick Luke, started for the Aggies.

For the record, Matt did a great job as QB. But, by the time the second half rolled around, it was clear the fans were ready for "Johnny Football" to make his 2nd half debut. On the field Manziel didn't disappoint. He threw for 3 TDs in the 2nd half, and secured a 52-31 win over Rice. However, his behavior towards his opponents, which earned him an "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty, has been the main focus, rather than his performance on the field, as far as the media is concerned. (Check out the video below.)

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't like the fact that Manziel acted up on Saturday. It was immature, and he has some growing up to do. However, I was shocked at the fact that one penalty and showboating after a TD (which, by the way he did all last season,) remained the top story on ESPN all weekend. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I mean, Manziel did keep ESPN in business this summer, as they relished in the controversy surrounding his alleged autograph scandal. But if you were watching the game, it was pretty obvious this was what the announcers were hoping for. Rather than call the game, they harped on that penalty and Manziel's behavior for as long as they could milk it.

And the attention didn't stop there. All weekend, ESPN commentators beat a dead horse discussing Manziel's behavior, rather than the slew of college games played this weekend. My Facebook feed was flooded with "Open Letters" to Manziel written by moms or Aggie fans. Here's the thing. Manziel is a 20 year old kid. Does he have more responsibility as a representative of A&M and a Heisman winner? Sure. Should he get his temper under control? Definitely. But let's be honest, most of us would have responded to a taunt the same way when we were in college. (And maybe even still now, like when someone cuts us off in traffic.) It's funny that we spend all weekend talking about one penalty, but the media doesn't mention the fact that in the off season Johnny spends alot of his time at children's hospitals, autographing balls for kids (for free), or even rescuing kittens on campus.

We all agree that it would be better for everyone if "Johnny Football" got his game together off the field, but ask yourself this question. Would you rather have a QB who is a "nice guy" and an average player start for your team on Saturdays, or someone who is more talented than any player we've seen in ages, and is also cocky on the field. I know the PC answer might be the former, but I'm gonna be honest. I'll take Johnny Manziel all day long.

The bottom line for me is, I just want to watch good football. So can we please just focus on the game first? Because if I wanted to watch people talk about bad attitudes or drama, I'll just tune into the Real Housewives.
